Deepsikha Jain, a nutritionist and content creator took to Instagram to share an important but highly underrated digestion tip. She supplements the reel with a caption that suggests sleeping on the left side is a potential cure for constipation. This is because it fastens the movement of faecal matter from the small intestine to the large intestine. It makes things move quickly in the body and cures constipation.

Apart from that, one can also consume laxatives like flax, chia seeds and coffee to efficiently clean the bowel. In her reel, Deepsikha explains when you’re sleeping on the left side, gravity plays a big role in fastening the movement of the bowel in your intestine. This will reduce acid reflux and improve one’s digestion. It encourages you to visit the bathroom first thing in the morning. If one suffers from chronic constipation, then sleeping on the left side is advisable as per the nutritionist.

Kanikka Malhotra, a consultant dietician and diabetes educator revealed to The Indian Express that sleeping on the left side may aid digestion compared to other positions. This is because of the anatomy of the stomach and intestines. She explains that the stomach is located on the left side of one’s abdomen.

So, gravity helps the food move from the stomach to the small intestine seamlessly in this position. Also, the sphincter valve is located on the right side. This valve controls the follow of digested material from the small to the large intestine. This allows gravity to aid the passage of waste through this valve.

However, there is limited conclusive research on the same. Also, individual anatomy and digestive function can vary, so this tip may not be effective for everyone. It does differ from person to person.
