Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing the harshest winter as the coldest period ‘Chilai Kalan’ started in the Kashmir valley. The temperatures have hit sub-zero in most of the parts of the valley and Srinagar witnessed the coldest night at minus 6 degrees and Gulmarg at minus 9 respectively. The 40-day long ‘Chillai Kalan’ started on December 21 will be followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.

The popular Drang waterfall in Kashmir has completely frozen due and hundreds of tourists are thronging to the valley to witness the winter wonderland. Kashmir is witnessing sunny and foggy days and the nights continue to record sub-zero temperatures.

The state witnessed its first snowfall earlier, where Sadhna Top in Karnah, Kupwara, and the higher reaches of the Zoji La Pass, , were covered in snow . The mercury dropped  and the fresh snow in Kashmir had made it a wonderland. The roofs of cottages were laced with snow, the pine trees were adorned with white pearls.

Amidst the white blanket of ice covering the ground and the picturesque mountains posing as the perfect backdrop, the snowfall has brought certain difficulties for the residents of Kashmir. The snowfall has also made life difficult for the people of Kashmir. They are forced to remain indoors, the flight operations have been disrupted and the road links have been snapped.

An official of the Meteorological department stated that snowfall was witnessed in the higher regions of the Kashmir in the wee hours of the morning.
