Kerala’s houseboats and backwaters are one of the most loved tourist attractions. However, a tragic incident took place that resulted in the loss of lives. In Malappuram District of Kerala, a double-decker boat overturned and sank near a beach. Moreover, 22 people were killed in this accident. Kerala Boat Tragedy

The unfortunate incident took place on Sunday in the Tanur area of Malappuram district. According to the reports, around 7 pm, a double-decker boat overturned and sank near the Tuvalthiram beach. The number of deaths reported is 22, including 7 children. Despite the sale of 40 tickets, there were more passengers found on the boat. However, the exact number is still unknown. Additionally, the boat lacked a safety certificate. There were multiple security and safety rules broken. According to the police, a culpable homicide case has been registered against the boat owner.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is carrying out rescue operations. And underwater cameras are being used for those who are missing.

Plea For Relief & Help

After the incident took place, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted conveying his condolences for the loss of lives. He also announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakhs from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund).

Rahul Gandhi also conveyed his condolences about the boat capsize. He further requested Congress workers to assist the authorities in the rescue mission. He also prayed for the victims’ speedy recovery. As for Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he is set to visit the tragedy site today. Along with this, he has postponed all events as a mark of respect for the victims.

The authorities are working towards handling the situation and assisting the victims. Immediate medical assistance was also given to them.

Before boarding a boat, it is necessary to take safety precautions. The Kerala incident wasn’t the first one. In Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district, a boat capsized in a pond. Moreover, this happened due to overcrowding too.
