Madhur Jaffrey Wins The James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award; Becomes 1st South Asian To Do So

Madhur Jaffrey is a British-Indian chef and television personality who is widely acknowledged as one of the major popularisers of Indian cuisine in the west. Her cap is adorned with the feathers of many culinary and acting accomplishments, the latest being the Lifetime Achievement Award by the illustrious James Beard Foundation. This isn’t the first time she’s been awarded by this prestigious organisation but she did just become the first South Asian to win the award in this category.

Madhur Jaffrey Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

That Madhur Jaffrey is a multi-talented woman is obvious to all those who know of her repute. While she has won many awards for her many cookbooks, she is also a very critically acclaimed actress. She is especially known for her role in the 1965 movie ‘Shakespeare Wallah’. In the movie, she stars alongside the contemporary heartthrob Shashi Kapoor.

Throughout her life, she has penned multiple award-winning cookbooks. Some of her major works include ‘An Invitation To Indian Cooking,’ ‘Far Eastern Cookery,’ ‘A Taste Of India,’ ‘Madhur Jaffrey’s Step-By-Step Cooking,’ and ‘Madhur Jaffrey’s World Of East Vegetarian Cooking.’

Year after year, her cookbooks have won many awards. She has received a total of six James Beard Foundation Awards to date, not including the latest lifetime achievement award. Arguably, another one of the major awards she has received is the Padma Bhushan Award by the government of India. She won this third-highest civilian honour last year in 2022 for her efforts in democratising Indian cuisine worldwide. She is often dubbed as ‘the actress who can cook’ for her acclaim in the performing as well as the culinary arts.
