Maharashtra’s Jewellery Mithai Leaves Foodies Curious & Drooling

During Holi, homes and temples all across India get decked up beautifully with rangolis, colourful flower garlands and more. But did you know about the flower garlands of Maharashtra that are edible too? Known as Jewellery Mithai or Flower Mithai or Gathi, these orange and white garlands are actually sweets. Shops in Maharashtra make this special sweet on the occasion of Holi. This is a Maharashtrian springtime sweet that also holds importance during Gathi Padwa, a celebration that marks the new year for Marathi Hindus.

The Garland Sweet Is Made With Sugar Syrup

Popular food vlogger Amar Sirohi shared the video of the making of this unique sweet on his social media handle foodie_incarnate. He had taken the video at a shop in Nashik. Foodies on the internet are going gaga over the concept. In the video, we see the vendors first making sugar syrup. They then take long wooden sweet moulds and put threads inside them. They then put aside a part of sugar syrup in a bowl and add an orange hue to it. The plain and orange syrups are then put alternatively in lines over the mould. After five minutes, as the sweet sets in, they remove the extra sweet over the mould. After opening the mould, they take out the sweet shaped like a flower garland.

The Sweet Can Be Made At Home Too

Not only do the sweet shops remain busy making Gathi before Holi and Gathi Padwa, but the sweet is also made in many Maharashtrian households. Often, homestyle Gathi sweets are made without using any mould. If you search ‘Gathi sweet’ on YouTube, you will find multiple videos of the recipe. So, this Holi season, make this unique delicacy at home and surprise your loved ones.
