Recently, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has launched the Abu Dhabi Wildlife Rescue Network. For those who don’t know, this is an initiative that has been designed in such a way that it accelerates emergency responses, coordinates rescue efforts, and offers the essential care that is needed for wildlife across the emirate. Bringing together government entities NGO and more, here’s how the network aims to intervene, rehabilitate and return animals to their natural habitat.

The Environment Agency Launches Abu Dhabi Wildlife Rescue Network

As announced by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, this network brings together non-governmental organisations, government entities, private sector partners, and academic institutions. It supports timely intervention, successful rehabilitation, and allows the animals to return to their natural habitats or wherever their condition allows them to.

The field event, which took place at Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, saw a significant environmental milestone. It was highlighted by the release of a group of rehabilitated sea turtles back into the waters of the Arabian Gulf. This also marked a new chapter in Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s effort, which aims to establish a more responsive and coordinated approach towards wildlife emergencies.

It should be noted that this network builds on the extensive experience of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. They have immense experience when it comes towards rescuing sea turtles, dugongs, sea snakes, dolphins, and birds.

How Does The Rescue Work?

The next question that arises is, ‘How does this digital rescue system work?’ Well, it’s quite simple!

  • It starts with the initial response and reporting, where members of the public or partner organisations can report an animal in distress through the official channels. They can contact the Abu Dhabi government contact centre on 800500.
  • The next step is field assessment and stabilisation. In this step, a specialised field team is dispatched so that they can assess the situation. They are equipped with appropriate first aid and rescue tools, offering immediate assistance that allows them to stabilise the animal’s condition.
  • Treatment and specialised rehabilitation are the next step, wherein the injured and distressed animal is transferred to specialised rehabilitation facilities.
  • The final step is returning the animal to its natural habitat, where the animal, once it fully recovers, is released back into its natural habitat or whenever its condition permits.

A Platform To Share Expertise

This network, beyond rescue and rehabilitation, also provides a platform that allows it to share expertise and scientific insights. Data is collected through documentation of rescue cases. Then it allows them to monitor species, helps investigate animal mortality, and even allows experts to identify emerging environmental threats. So, it’s not wrong to say that this network is not just a local commitment towards protecting endangered animals, but it also showcases how environmental agencies can be managed through coordinated efforts.
