Monster Cyclone Tauktae Leaves Behind A Trail Of Destruction In Mumbai; Several Structures Damaged

Mumbai witnessed an extremely severe cyclonic storm Tauktae on Monday. According to Mumbai IMD, the highest wind speed of 108 km per hour was recorded at the Colaba observatory. The viral video of huge waves crashing onto the shores near Gateway of India gave us chills. While the roads turned into rivers in Mumbai, it left behind a trail of destruction. Here’s how the city suffered.

Six Dead In Maharashtra Due To Gusty Winds

Six people died and nine were injured as the storm brushed past Maharashtra. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s office tweeted that vehicular movement was being restored after removing trees and electric poles that fell due to gusty winds.

Several Building Walls Fell Off On The Street

About 50 feet wall of a society and one building street light pole fell on four parked vehicles in Lokapuram, Thane. Strong Winds Damaged Structures And Caused Waterlogging

Mumbai witnessed the highest-ever wind speed of 114km on Monday. Heavy rainfall pummelled while flight operations were suspended for hours. The Bandra-Worli sea link also remained shut because of strong winds. The strong winds damaged many structures in the city and many low-lying areas reported waterlogging.

127 People Missing After Vessel Sinks Off Mumbai Coast

Some 127 people went after a vessel adrift off Mumbai’s coast sank during Cyclone Tauktae. The Indian Navy had deployed two ships and helicopters to assist in the search. The vessel was carrying 273 people when it started drifting as strong winds battered India’s western coast.

The Indian Navy has rescued 146 people on board a barge that went adrift near Mumbai in the Arabian sea hours before Cyclone Tauktae made landfall on the Gujarat coast. The Navy also deployed the P-8I long-range, multimission maritime patrol aircraft for search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the Navy is on standby in Gujarat. The Army is continuously monitoring the situation and 180 relief and rescue teams are on standby.
