Mumbai: Platforms On All Suburban Railway Stations Beyond Thane To Be Extended To Accommodate 15-Car Local Trains

Officials of Central Railways or CR are planning a major upgrade for platforms on the main line of the network beyond Thane as per an exclusive article by the FPJ. They will be extended to accommodate 15-coach trains which help in reducing congestion during peak hours. Once this upgrade is done, local trains will be able to accommodate as many as 2.25 lakh additional passengers. A feasibility study was conducted by the authorities that determined that this upgrade would be viable.

According to an exclusive article which was recently published by The Free Press Journal or the FPJ, as of now, only Dombivli and Kalyan stations have platforms that can accommodate 15-coach trains. This creates a hurdle in effectively using the 15-coach trains.

As of now, the 15-car trains only run 22 services because the stations after Thane lack the infrastructure needed to accommodate the trains. However, since the feasibility study affirms the plan to extend the platforms, the proposal is now at an advanced stage.

It has been sanctioned for the Kalyan-Badlapur and Kalyan-Asangaon lines. The officials are also planning on extending platforms on the Badlapur-Karjat and Asangaon-Kasara routes.

As per the FPJ article, there are a few officials who have expressed certain reservations about extending the platforms. It is believed that one of the concerns expressed is that the frequency of the trains will reduce if 15-car train services are increased.

However, proponents of this plan have pointed out that similar concerns were raised when the extension of platforms on the Western line was happening. However, the extension is now generally considered a smart move and has helped in reducing congestion on the line.

As of now, only one platform on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus or CSMT is capable of accommodating 15-car trains. There are plans to extend platforms 5, 6 and 7.
