Mumbai Police is all set to bring back an old trend, horse patrolling! Yes, you read that right. You will soon see the personnel of Mumbai Police straddling these majestic four-legged creatures. The proposal for the same has been given a go-ahead by the government of Maharashtra. Intrigued and want to know more? According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, the application for the revival was sent by the commissioner of Mumbai Police. The plan for the same was presented on July 5, 2024.

The government of Maharashtra accepted the commissioner’s application for the revival of horse-mounted patrolling on July 26, 2024. As per the plan, a budget of ₹36.53 crores will be set aside for this initiative. As many as 30 horses will be acquired for this initiative as of now and this cost a total of ₹1.2 crore.

A major chunk of this budget, ₹34 crores, is allocated for the construction of the stables for the horses. The stable will be located in Marol Naka in the Andheri neighbourhood of the city. If reports are to go by, the construction will be completed in two phases.

The rest of the budget will be spent on sporting equipment, ceremonial uniforms, training, saddlery, transportation and more. In addition to this, another ₹1.88 crores will be used for recurrent expenses like maintenance of the horses, groomer’s wages, vaccines, and more.

As of now, the Mumbai Police has two horses with them. Previously, a similar plan had been suggested. This was in 2018. However, owing to a number of discrepancies in the plan, it never came to fruition.
