New Ayodhya Airport: Cost, Architecture Style, First Pics & More As Construction Reaches Final Stage

The planned airport in Ayodhya is a location full of Ramayana symbolism, from murals and artwork to etched texts gracing its lone terminal built in the Nagara style of temple architecture. The Maryada Purushottam Sri Ram International Airport is presently undergoing final preparations for its official opening by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, which coincides with the consecration ceremony of the Ram idol at the city’s Ram Temple.

New Ayodhya Airport Reaches Final Stage Of Construction

The airport is designed using the Nagara architectural style, which was also used to build the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which is currently under construction, according to experts involved in the project’s architectural design.

It is understood that the pillars, which connect the inside of the terminal to the exterior of the old temple, are made of carved red stone and combine ancient temple architecture with contemporary facilities.

According to the experts, murals and other artwork with Ramayana themes are being installed quickly. One of the main themes will be the “bow and arrow” mural with Lord Ram images planned outside the airport entrance, along with other artworks.

The 65,000-square-foot terminal’s roof will be held up by seven enormous columns, which stand for the seven Ramayana “Kandas” (books). The airport terminal will feature a “shikhara,” or superstructure, tower, or spire, and a rectangular base with carved pillars, much like ancient temples.

Eight-Arched Terminal

Upon initial inspection, the ₹250 crore airport under construction appears to be a fitting representation of the city’s rich cultural legacy.

The airport will greet travellers from all around the world in a magnificent way, according to Harsh Varshneya, a prominent architect involved in the design process. The rich history and splendour of Ayodhya will be narrated through the elaborate carvings and artwork.

During the first phase, the eight-arched terminal will be able to accommodate two to three flights per hour. It will accomodate over 350 passengers. Over the course, it will be able to accommodate over 750 passengers during peak hours.

In addition to smaller aircraft, the 2,200-metre runway will support the landing of larger aircraft. This includes Boeing 737, Airbus 319, and Airbus A320, according to officials. There are plans to extend the runway to 3,700 metres. This will enable the landing of even larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 777 or 787. (as per The Indian Express)

Expected To Handle Boost In Tourism

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiradiya Scindia and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath recently reviewed the airport’s continuing construction.

The CM had set December 15 as the completion date. But the project authorities stated that the work would only be finished by the end of December.

On January 22, 2024, the Ram temple in Ayodhya is scheduled to open. The Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust has determined that on January 22 the opening of the temple take place. Between noon and 12:45 p.m., Ram Lalla will be crowned in the sanctum-sanctorum of the Ram Temple.

The building of the Ram temple is expected to boost Ayodhya’s tourism. The airport in Ayodhya will handle the increase in visitors to the city.
