Let us tell you that Kolkata has over one lakh sweet shops, but one of them stands out. Why? Well, because of its authenticity and people’s age-old trust that this shop lives up to. Kolkata’s BMRM (Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick) is not just a sweet shop; it’s an emotion!

Kolkata’s BMRM Sweet Shop Is An Emotion

Under Sudip Mullick’s direction, the 137-year-old family firm, Kolkata’s BMRM, is currently in its fourth generation and has undergone numerous changes throughout the years. But their quality and traditional recipes are the same.

There are fifteen BMRM stores in Kolkata. Its 11,000-square-foot flagship location is in Bhowanipore.

Their best-selling goods are Jhol Bhora Sandesh, Norom Pak Sandesh, Nolen Gur Sandesh, Baked Rosogolla, Mango Doi, and Souffle Sandesh. They also have Brownies, Kaju Katli and also non-Bengali sweets.

Sudip has also brought back to life a number of venerable Bengali dessert dishes. Patishapta Pitha, a rice dish, is one of them. He claims that a long line forms to purchase this mithai from his store.

150 Different Types Of Desserts And Snacks

Kolkata’s BMRM draws both residents and celebrities alike, who come back time and time again for their favourite mishti.

Sachin Tendulkar was one of the celebrities who was once called Sudip. He expressed his gratitude to them for the wonderful experience, saying he had never had a dish quite like our mango gelato. Poets, politicians, athletes, and Bollywood stars like Sara Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui often frequent this location.

The company claims to have 150 different types of snacks and desserts. A daily billing of 500–1000 snacks and sweets is observed in each store. In addition to fulfilling online orders from all around India, BMRM also handles large orders for weddings. According to Sudip, milk is used to make 99 percent of the sweets in BMRM stores.

Embraced Many Changes In 137 Years

For an extended period, BMRM functioned in a conventional manner. Each candy was handmade by hand. But, in order to scale up, the brand had to increase output. Sudip therefore implemented mechanical automation sometime in 2005. These days, portion control, beating, kneading, and mixing are done by machines made in China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Sudip claims that they have embraced worldwide sanitary standards, updated their kitchen with new appliances and machinery, and redesigned the packaging.

Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick has grown organically as a result of the overwhelming demand, surpassing the landmark Salt Lake store. They currently have 30,000 central kitchens, which resemble European cheese factories and are furnished with cutting-edge equipment and tools.

In the upcoming three years, Sudip intends to open five more stores, one of which will be in Howrah. Regarding the brand’s future, Sudip states that he does not intend to grow within India since he wants to preserve the BMRM legacy in Kolkata and the surrounding territories. However, his grand plan is to take BMRM global, extending to Dubai and New Jersey, and establish it as a byword for Kolkata.
