New York To Shut Indoor Dining From Today Amid The Rise In Covid-19 Cases

New York is not only known for Central Perk and everything glitz and glam, but the city is also a mecca for cafes and fine dining restaurants. However, thanks to the pandemic, New York is not New York anymore. While varied other industries are slowly picking up the pace amid the pandemic, the restaurant industry is struggling hard to survive. And now, as per the latest updates, starting today, indoor dining will be shut in New York. This new update was announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Indoor Dining In New York Will Be Shut For The Second Time Amid The Rising Cases In The City

Indoor dining will now be shut down in the city for the second time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The covid-19 cases in the city are on the rise; hence restaurants will have to take measures similar to those of the pandemic’s early days when New York was the epicentre of the country’s outbreak.

While announcing the news, Governor Cuomo further requested the lawmakers to act swiftly to save the struggling restaurant industry as these new restrictions will again make it difficult for the restaurant owners to survive. In a press conference, he said,

“The federal government must provide relief to these bars and restaurants in this next package.”

Reports State That 110,000 Restaurants Have Shut This Year Due To The Pandemic

Furthermore, he also shared that as of Friday, there were 1,668 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York City.

Indoor dining bounced back in late September and now considering it as a high-risk scenario- it’s shut again. As for the restaurants, reports in Food and wine state that approx 110,000 restaurants have closed this year due to the pandemic, and the number is expected to rise by 10,000 before the end of the year.

The majority of enduringly closed restaurants were well-established businesses in their communities. On average these restaurants had been in business for 16 years. And 16 per cent had been open for at least 30 years.
