Nostalgia Gone Wrong: Australian Couple Mistakenly Fined For ₹80,000 Posting Old Travel Pictures

Who else remember words like ‘wanderlust’, ‘travelogue’? Ah! The good old days. Simpler times indeed. This lockdown comes at a bittersweet time because it makes us ponder everything that we have taken for granted. The simplest joys of meeting a friend at a cafe, going out without restrictions were not really looked upon. Even something as witnessing a sunset or seeing random people on the road now is a luxury. It is ironic indeed that all this nostalgia can also make people fall in trouble.

What’s In It?

A couple from Victoria in Australia, Jaz and Garry Mott of Traralgon, recently were rummaging through their stockpiles when they happen to come across some images of their travel back in 2019 to Lakes Entrance. Sharing this nostalgia on Facebook, this couple posted some twelve photos of their travel. What they did not realize however, their nostalgia can become a thorn in their side.

Four days after posting the pictures, on April 9th, they were greeted by a policeman at their door who handed them a fine and walked off. Contacting the police station, they were told to pay a large sum of AU$1,652 (approx ₹80,000) each, for “failure to comply with a direction given to a person in the exercise of a power under an authorization given under section 199”. The couple then contacted the media and luckily, their fine was revoked. However, they have been warned about posting such holiday pictures in the future.

What’s More?

In most countries around the world, a lockdown is an effort by the government to flatten the curve. This means that the number of patients or infected people should not be more than the number of hospitals in a given area. In a lockdown, one cannot leave their home for any non-essential work. Essential activities would be under buying food and other necessary items, accessing medical services, providing medical care amongst other facilities. Well, these holiday pictures almost costed alot for the Australian couple. But all’s well that ends well right. So till we can all go out, let’s replay our happy travel memories, but do be careful about posting them online. From Asking Bananas To Paying Hospital Bills Bangalore Police Deals With Weird Requests During Lockdown
