Oh No! Antarctica’s Emperor Penguins Declared Endangered Species

Climate change is gradually pushing the world towards doomsday. It is impacting the natural balance at an alarming level, and now the emperor penguins of Antarctica are bearing its brunt too. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has declared these exotic birds ‘endangered’ under the Endangered Species Act.

The primary reason behind the extinction of these birds has been cited as climate change.

Climate Change Is The Biggest Threat To Emperor Penguins

Environmentalists are working closely to identify and reverse the effects of global warming. But the number of factors leading to the phenomenon is infinite. The ice sheet in Antarctica has started melting, and this can lead to a rise in sea levels in coastal cities worldwide. Experts have even warned that many cities might go underwater by the end of the century. The depletion of sea ice in Antarctica directly impacts the normal livelihood of emperor penguins. The introduction of tourism and lavish cruises in the delicate zones of the polar continent is aggravating the threat on these species.

Impact Of Climate Change On Ecological Balance

Reportedly, the world has nearly 625,000 to 650,000 emperor penguins now. But owing to the detrimental effects of climate change, the number might be reduced by around 47% by 2050. And this will impact the overall ecological balance. The penguin settlements across the globe might become extinct if the situation doesn’t improve. Now, many resorts, hotels, homestays and even eateries are switching to sustainable and eco-friendly practices to ensure that the world has a better future.
