If you’re from Bengaluru, there’s one thing you know, that parking is a huge hassle in the city. More often than not people prefer to buy smaller cars or travel in two-wheelers just to find easy parking options. Well, to tackle the parking problems in Namma Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has approved a new parking policy.  And it will be costly.  The Urban Development Department approved Parking Policy 2.0. According to this policy, you must get ready to shell out up to ₹5000 per year to park in front of your own house on the main road. Read on to know more.

Parking To Get Costlier In Bengaluru

Free parking on public roads will be a thing of the past in Bengaluru. A draft policy framed by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) aims to decongest roads in the city and ensure the smooth movement of people and vehicles. According to a report by The News Minute, DULT’s policy will make sure Bengaluru follows a pay and park system in a few areas of the city. A permit system will be put into place for allowing designated parking zones near the homes of residents.

Pay Upto ₹5000 Per Year To Park In Front Of Your Own House On Public Road

For small cars, Bengalureans must pay annually  ₹1000, for medium cars, it’s ₹3000 or ₹4000. Now, for SUVs, the parking permit costs ₹5000 per year. Bicycles will be exempted for parking in designated areas. Residents can purchase these permits of an annual or quarterly basis. And then when it expires, they can renew them. The policy document further states,  “However, a permit does not guarantee a parking spot but only authorizes the permit holder to park on the road for which the permit is allotted if space is available.”

With this new policy in place, you can expect the roads of Bengaluru to get decongested. Existing CCTV cameras will also be used to ensure people follow these parking regulations. Moreover, this new parking policy will encourage Bengalureans to commute by public transport. Parking revenue will be used to improve footpaths, cycle paths and others.
