Going on a vacation to an oil rig might definitely not make you jump in joy. But, hold on! A huge oil drilling platform in Saudi Arabia is set to be transformed into an 800-room hotel and theme park. Now, that’s a cool ‘oil rig’ to holiday in, right? The Rig –is the world’s first holiday spot to be inspired by offshore oil platforms. Here’s what we know so far about this cool, new entertainment venue in Saudi.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is the brain behind the latest tourism attraction called The Rig. Located on the Arabian Gulf, on Saudi’s east coast, the Rig will span 150,000 square metres. The new venue will have it all- from adventure sports to resorts. Currently, the Rig will feature three hotels with a total of 800 rooms, offering spectacular views of the waterscape.

Besides, the destination will also have eleven restaurants where foodies can enjoy world-class cuisine. So, whether you’re craving Chinese, want to dine in an Instagrammable setting or dine in style in a world-renowned restaurant, you’ll be able to do it all at The Rig.

Adventure junkies will love The Rig, as it promises that it is “no theme park, it’s an extreme park”. Thrill seekers can enjoy bungee, board and base jumping, as well as the world’s biggest climbing wall.

Well, for that matter, even getting to the Rig will be an experience in itself. Guests can travel in a ferry, yacht, cruise or helicopter and you can land at its very own helipad. Besides, the venue will have berths for 50 yachts.

An opening date was not disclosed, with the PIF only saying that the project was part of its 2021-2025 strategy.

Saudi’s new blockbuster project is part of the Kingdom’s plans to diversify the kingdom’s economy and to become an international tourism destination.
