Schengen Visa Demand Sees 44% Increase In India; Interview Slot Shortages Disrupt Travel Plans

There’s a travel boom brewing in India, with a significant rise in Schengen visa applications. Last year saw a staggering 44% increase, reaching a total of 9.7 lakh applications. This surge places India as the second-fastest growing applicant pool, just behind China. However, this enthusiasm for European travel has been met with a frustrating hurdle – a shortage of interview slots at embassies and consulates.

This lack of interview slots is throwing a wrench into the travel plans of many Indians. Industry experts believe the actual demand is likely even higher than the official figures suggest. With limited interview slots available, many potential applicants are unable to even get their applications started, let alone secure their visas in time for their desired travel dates.

The situation has caused significant frustration for both travellers and travel agents. According to Anil Kalsi, Vice President of the Travel Agents Federation of India, securing appointments for peak travel seasons like summer is nearly impossible for some popular Schengen countries.

He highlights the struggle in a statement to TOI, “For appointments with Germany and Italy, the earliest date available might be in July, making travel plans incredibly difficult.” This delay forces travellers to choose between rescheduling trips or potentially losing out on bookings and pre-paid arrangements.

Reasons Behind the Rush To Europe

The reasons behind the surge in Schengen visa applications are multifaceted. The easing of pandemic restrictions has undoubtedly fuelled pent-up demand for international travel. Additionally, a growing Indian middle class with a taste for exploration is likely a contributing factor.

Europe, with its rich tapestry of cultures, historical landmarks, and scenic beauty, remains a top travel destination for many Indians. While the current situation presents challenges, it also signifies a positive trend – a growing appetite for international travel amongst Indians.

Addressing the interview slot shortage is crucial to ensure a smoother experience for travellers. This could involve increasing embassy staff or exploring alternative interview processes, such as video conferencing, to streamline the application procedure.

For travellers with their hearts set on a European adventure, staying informed and being flexible with travel dates is key. Working closely with travel agents who can navigate the application process and advise on appointment availability can also be beneficial. With some planning and a dash of patience, Indian travellers can hopefully turn their Schengen visa dreams into reality.
