10 Reasons To Visit Kalpa Instead Of Spiti In Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is India’s all-time favourite holiday destination. The sheer number of options in one state leave us stunned. Yet, we are still uncovering gems in the northern mountains. Kalpa is one such gem that no one talks about. (We wonder if it’s on purpose to save beloved mountains from commercialisation.) Here’s why you should ditch the Shimla(s) and Manali(s) for something new.

1. Unique Location

Kalpa is a small town in Kinnaur district. It’s nestled in the Sutlej river valley making it an ideal vacation spot. Most visitors stumble on to this place on their way to the famous Spiti Valley. Seekers must climb 16 km of steep narrow road from the Shimla Kaza highway. The labour is instantly worth it when you’re greeted by an all-encompassing view of Kinnaur Kailash peaks. You’re high enough to leave the world below and enter the world of clouds and dreams. Fun fact India’s first ever voter Shyam Saran Negi belongs to Kalpa!

2. Breathtaking beauty

Apple is a major cash crop in Kalpa. You know what that means? Apple orchards everywhere! The patterns of apple orchards and pinewoods line the way from Rekong Peo for 7 km to the lap of Kalpa. The Jorkanden peak at 6,473 meters is all one can and wants to see from the humble spot where your feet touch the ground.

3. Inner Silence

Unlike the loud and overcrowded lanes of Shimla or the emptiness of Spiti, Kalpa is the perfect balance. People who prefer offbeat locations in desi hills opt for this serene town. Here you will find the liberty of slipping into silence and search your soul. When you need a break from all the searching, there will be fellow travellers to keep you company. This is the golden way to inner peace and silence, where everything is an option, and nothing is forced.

4. Let it snow

The temperatures drop to -15 in peak winters. We did say this place is close to Spiti, didn’t we? The whole valley is covered in white magic with frozen drops of rain falling from the sky. There is not better welcome. A magical winter escape from the sets of Frozen await you in Himachal. Tall overarching pinewoods are layered in snowy goodness and apple orchards are ever more beautiful. Summertime brings full bloom which is a whole other mood altogether, just as spectacular in Kalpa. These Snowy Properties In Himachal Pradesh Are Perfect For A Delhi Getaway You Will Never Forget!

5. Sapni Fort

Carvings, art and royalty, Sapni Fort is the most popular spot in Kalpa. Raja Padam Singh of Rampur built this ancient fort in 1869. The tower style temple fort was reconstructed in 2014 by joining two buildings together. The fort is facing the valley for magnificent views. It’s close to Sapni village in the vicinity of Kalpa. The main tower has 7 floors creaking their way through life. A grand Kali temple rules the fifth floor with fine woodwork and historical traces.

6. Narayan-Nagini Temple

Behind Kalpa Fort, a Kinnauri collection of temples gracefully joins the mountain view. A traditional Tibetan Pagoda style architectural beauty sits atop the hills of Chini Village. Durga Maa takes the throne in Narayan-Nagini Temple. The golden roof shines from far away making it very easy for visitors to find their way.

7. Walk your way

A little nature glory is what people go to the hills for. While temples and to dos are everywhere in India, walking trails are only so beautiful in the hills. Hiking to the Kinnaur peaks or just taking a stroll around is extremely satisfying. The only way to beat the cold in Kalpa is with body heat. Roghi Village, 8 km from Kalpa, is a great goal to walk to. The road is a bit dangerous but nothing out of the ordinary for adrenaline junkies who just can’t let go of a view. The cliff-hugging road is just as beautiful as the Kinnaur Kailash range view.

8. Chakka trek

Kalpa is the starting point of this famous hiking trail. A view 15,000 feet above sea level is only 2-3 hours from Kalpa. You’ll be back before you know it with a memory you’ll treasure forever. Make sure to be back before it’s dark so that you can enjoy the journey through a valley and lake. Local guides are also available for help on the spot.

9. Affordable and accessible

Kalpa is open for tourists all year round. July to August see heavy rainfall, causing landslides, and even that does not stop tourists from following their wanderlust. Accommodation starts from ₹800 with free cancellation, astonishing views and warm tourists all around. Summer, winter and spring are all great experiences in Kalpa without added trouble of overcrowded places or traffic. Run To These Budget Hostels In Himachal And Live In The Mountains Under ₹699.

10. Just be

Forget all the walking and touring and just breathe in and out. The whole point of escaping to a remote location like Kalpa is so you can do nothing. Our busy city lives make us forget the purpose of our existence: to exist. Be happy and make merry. If staying in bed with the view of the mountains is what makes you happy, then that’s the best kind of Netflix and chill.
