Punjab first offered free travel for women on all government buses in the state. Now, in a similar landmark move, the Tamil Nadu government announced free of cost travel in buses for differently-abled and transwomen in the state. All buses operated by government-run transport corporations will implement this initiative and this rule will come into force after the lockdown is lifted. Here’s what you need to know.
Tamil Nadu To Provide Free Bus Services To Differently-Abled & Transwomen
To commemorate the 97th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the Tamil Nadu government announced a number of initiatives in the state. Firstly, the government has offered free of cost travel in town buses for transwomen and differently-abled people on government-run buses in urban regions. The government release revealed that this will be implemented after Tamil Nadu lifts the coronavirus induced lockdown. Earlier, Punjab announced free travel in government buses for all women of the state.

Other Initiatives Announced Include Hospital & Modern Library
Apart from the free bus travel initiative for differently-abled and transgender women, the government also announced other initiatives. This includes setting up a 500-bed multi-super speciality hospital in South Chennai, on the premises of King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research. The project would cost ₹250 crores. Madurai shall house a modern library in honour of the former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. A new state award will be implemented to encourage Tamil writers who put Tamil literature on the map, through their contributions.
