Mamleshwar Temple is a little temple with a fascinating history. Its stone structure, flanked by the magnificent Himalayas, has a gently flowing pool in front of it that has an ancient pedestal and a Shivling. According to tradition, Goddess Parvati gave her son Lord Ganesha, whom she had made herself during her husband Lord Shiva’s absence, the order to stay watch while she took a bath.

When Shiva returns, he finds a strange face blocking his path. He beheads Ganesha, but instead of receiving Parvati’s wrath and learning that Ganesha is their kid, he replaces Ganesha’s head with a bull elephant’s, therefore claiming fatherhood.

You may reach the Mamal (or Mamalaka) village temple, which dates back to the 4th century, by driving ten minutes from Pahalgam town across the roaring Lidder River. Built-in the austere Kashmiri architectural style, the all-grey stone house measures only 8 feet within and has a two-tiered pyramidal top. Clear, blue-green spring waters rise in a 12-foot stone basin in front of the porch.

According to a government sign, this might be the Mameswara Temple that King Jayasimha of Kalhana’s royal chronicle Rajatarangini states was embellished with a gold finial in the twelfth century. Similar to tales from the epics, other locations—like Uttarakhand’s Gauri Kund—also claim to be the site of Ganesha’s tryst with Shiva.

The legend’s ability to serve as a metaphor is one of its most exquisite features. Like the modest temple and the heavenly doorkeeper, it’s a reminder that things are not always what they seem and that the god who removes all obstacles is also familiar with the challenges of navigating significant change.
