22-year-old Tushar Joshi lives in a small one-room home with his parents and sister in the Mayapuri slum in Delhi. The slum nestled near a railway track is a health hazard as it’s filled with trash and mosquitoes. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic creating havoc in his life, he defied all challenges to journey all the way from a slum to Sydney. Here’s his inspiring journey that will leave you in awe.

Covid-19 Creates Havoc In Tushar & His Family’s Lives

A BBC report revealed that Tushar Joshi graduated from the renowned Delhi University thanks to financial support from an NGO, Asha Society. His parents, who are labourers always encouraged him to pursue his dreams, despite the financial constraints. Where most children of labourers, quit studying at the age of 11 to become labourers, his parents were different. They wanted him to have a better life. Tushar looked forward to further studies after graduation from Delhi University. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic created havoc in his life. Tushar’s plans of studying were dampened. And his father lost his job, leaving the family scrambling for meals.

Getting A Scholarship At University Of Sydney & Studying Under A Lamp

Life took a 360-degree turn for Tushar when he won a scholarship for a master’s degree at the University of Sydney this year. Since then, he has been taking online classes to study international relations, specializing in law. But online classes at the University of Sydney isn’t an easy feat either. Staying in a one-room house with his family, there’s often clanking of vessels, whirring of passing trains and electricity issues and disrupt his learning. Yet, defying all struggles, Tushar studies under a dim light after his family sleeps at night. He is the first person in his family to attend university.

Dream To Work For The United Nations

The scholarship worth $44,000 ( 32,71,268 )provided by the University of Sydney includes a laptop, high-speed internet, tuition fees, living allowance, college residence, health insurance and flight tickets. Coming from a family where his father is illiterate and his mother is a homemaker, Tushar Joshi is grateful to his family and the university for the support. He revealed to the BBC that he dreams of working for the United Nations. With Covid cases dropping, his university plans to bring back 500 students from overseas before Christmas. Tushar is hoping he is on the list, so he can fly from Delhi to Sydney, making his family proud, and their dreams, a reality.
