This Man Quit His High-Paying Google Job To Sell Samosas; Gets Orders From Celebs Too

Life can be a surprising journey at times. Munaf Kapadia from Mumbai had probably never imagined that he would quit a high-paying job at Google to start a samosa business. It was just a realisation that made him change his path. Munaf belongs to the Dawoodi Bohra community. And authentic Bohri cuisine is rare to find in the food industry. Munaf realised that the flavourful dishes that his mother cooked in their home kitchen weren’t known much in the market. So, he started a food business with these home-cooked dishes right from his Mumbai residence.

He Sells Smoked Keema Samosas, Bohri Dum Biryani And More

It all began with an experiment in 2014. Munaf called up some friends at his home to serve an elaborate seven-course Bohra thali. And the experiment was a success. His guests relished the unique dishes and were highly satiated. From then, he started hosting dining experiences at home. In 2015, he officially launched the brand The Bohri Kitchen or TBK. Munaf sells special Bohri dishes like smoked keema samosas, nalli nihari, classic Bohri dum biryani, shahi rolls, bhuna masala, Bohri haleem and kaju chicken.

Getting Featured In ’30-Under-30′ By Forbes

Every business has its ups and downs. The Bohri Kitchen too had to overcome some dark phases. As reported by The Better India, Munaf dealt with hefty losses in 2016 as his delivery kitchen couldn’t pick up as expected. On top of that, his stall at the 2015 NH7 Weekender Music Festival did not do well either. Munaf was about to give up when he got a call from Forbes to be featured in ’30-under-30′. Regaining his confidence, he changed his business strategies and soon had five outlets, four of which were for delivery. Though he had to shut down three of his outlets after the COVID-19 pandemic, his brand had earned name and fame by then. He is planning to reopen these outlets by the end of 2022.

His dishes have been liked by popular celebrities like Hrithik Roshan, Rishi Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. Rishi Kapoor had also visited his place to enjoy the sumptuous Bohri thali. His unique venture got featured by BBC too. Interestingly, Munif also turned author and wrote the book How I Quit Google To Sell Samosas.
