Vasilopita is a traditional Greek New Year’s cake that holds significant cultural and religious importance. It’s typically prepared and enjoyed on January 1st, which is also St. Basil’s Day in the Greek Orthodox Church. St. Basil was known for his kindness towards the poor and needy, and the cake is named after him. The cake is made to commemorate St. Basil’s life and teachings. A coin (called a “flouri”) is often hidden inside the cake before baking. It’s said that whoever finds the coin in their slice of cake will receive good luck for the coming year.

 When it’s time to serve the Vasilopita, it’s customary for the head of the household or an elder to make the sign of the cross over the cake. Then, the cake is cut into slices—one for each family member and sometimes an additional slice for the house, the poor, or St. Basil. The Vasilopita cutting is a joyful moment, often accompanied by singing, well-wishing, and celebration among family and friends. This cake is not only a delicious treat but also a symbol of unity, hope, and good fortune for the upcoming year. 

The Art Of Baking Vasilopita

Here’s a classic recipe for Vasilopita:


  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 coin (cleaned thoroughly)

For Garnish:

  • Sliced almonds or powdered sugar (for decoration)

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round or oblong cake pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, stir in the orange zest, lemon zest, and vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.
  • Gently fold the cleaned coin into the batter. Ensure it’s well-distributed.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, you can garnish the cake by dusting powdered sugar over the top or arranging sliced almonds in a decorative pattern.
