This NGO Has Been Empowering Women Displaced By Ranthambore National Park, Preserving Crafts & Community

Welcome to the inspiring journey of Dastkar Ranthambore, where the revitalization of crafts transformed not just livelihoods, but entire communities, particularly focusing on women displaced by the Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary. The tale begins over two decades ago, in the wake of the creation of Ranthambore National Park. As the sanctuary expanded, communities like Sherpur and Khilchipur found themselves displaced, their traditional ways of life disrupted. Among those most affected were women. In this scenario of displacement and disempowerment, Dastkar, a Delhi-based NGO dedicated to preserving India’s rich craft heritage, extended a helping hand. 

Dastkar Ranthambore Steps In, Crafting A Brighter Future

Recognising the potential of traditional crafts as a means of empowerment, Dastkar initiated the Ranthambore Project. Their mission was clear: to breathe new life into the fading crafts traditions of the Sawai-Madhopur district, particularly focusing on empowering women artisans.

The Dastkar Ranthambore Project was not just about preserving crafts; it was about transforming lives. Establishing the Dastkari Kendra, a crafts centre, became the cornerstone of this endeavour. Here, artisans received training in contemporary design, product development, and production systems. From tailoring to pottery, from indigo dyeing to block printing, artisans honed their skills under the guidance of experts from institutions like NID and NIFT.

The impact of Dastkar Ranthambore reverberated far beyond the confines of craft workshops. Women, once confined to purdah and economic dependence, emerged as confident entrepreneurs, managing their own enterprises with pride.

Milestones Of Transformation

The impact of Dastkar Ranthambore transcended economic boundaries. The Dastkari Kendra emerged as more than just a workplace; it became a hub for social development. Legal aid, health workshops, and family planning sessions found a platform here, enriching lives beyond economic realms. Here, adult literacy classes became a morning ritual, empowering women with knowledge and agency. From local markets to international shores, Dastkar artisans now cater to a global clientele, receiving orders from Europe and the US.

As Dastkar Ranthambore celebrates its journey of transformation, the path ahead is illuminated with promise. New villages continue to join the project, ensuring that the flame of craft revival burns ever brighter.  Through the hands of artisans and the vision of Dastkar, a new narrative unfolds—one of empowerment, equality, and enduring hope.
