The 600-acre Panju island, nestled in Vasai Creek is Maharashtra’s hidden gem. It housed 21 freedom fighters who’ve played an important role in India’s freedom struggle. The history of Panju island goes back to the time of Chimaji Appa, the legendary Maratha warrior. He used this island to take control of Vasai Fort from the Portuguese rule. He was the son of the first Peshwa, Balaji Bhat. Chimaji Appa used to carry out monetary transactions from this island. Today, this is one of the 26 islands in India that will be transformed into a tourist attraction. Read on to know more. 

Panju Island To Undergo Complete Revamp For Island Tourism 

Vinod Salve, statistical assistant of Palghar district’s Planning Committee revealed to Mid-Day that Panju island will undergo a complete transformation. The island situated between Naigaon and Bhayandar is part of the ₹80 crores eco-friendly tourism development plan. This project will help provide job opportunities to locals who at the present struggle to make a living. Panju island will be developed into a tourism circuit for island tourism. The master plan for the same has been created. He further added that authorities will build Central Amenity Centre, made of eco-friendly bamboo in the shape of a fish. This will be the island’s USP.

Panju Island To Have Selfie Point, Mangrove Park, Boat Rides & More

Moreover, the development works in Panju island include a mangrove park, a selfie point with life-size statues and sculptures and boat rides from the village jetty. According to the mid-day report, visitors can also go on a leisure walk or hire a cycle to explore the island. Eco-friendly golf carts will be available for the elderly and specially-abled. Nature lovers can spot the rich flora and fauna at the observation decks. Adventure enthusiasts can indulge in various activities like net climbing, wall climbing, long jump and pole climbing among others.

Panju island’s two lakes Gode talao and Khare talao will undergo beautification. Laser and water shows on the lakes will depict the rich history of the island that housed freedom fighters.
