Karnataka is known as the land of beautiful ancient temples in India. The state is home to many gorgeous temples and is a must-visit for everyone. Be it for their lovely architecture or their significance in mythology, temples in Karnataka have their own blissful charm. A Twitter user shared a thread of 15 temples to visit in the state. Let’s take a look at the list. 

Temples To Visit In Karnataka

1. Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

The tower of this temple is noteworthy because, according to local legend, it is a scale model of the large tower that once towered above the larger Kesava temple. 

2. Vitthala Temple, Hampi

During Devaraya II’s reign in the 15th century, the temple was constructed. The Vijaya Vittala shrine is another name for the Vittala-dedicated shrine. 

3. The Srikanteshwara temple, Nanjangud 

Devarajammanni, the queen of the Mysore monarch Krishnaraja Wadiyar III, constructed the nine-story, 120-foot-tall temple Gopuram and its expansive façade.

4. Sri Chamundeshwari Temple, Mysore

On top of the hill he governed, Goddess Durga is said to have killed the demon king Mahishasura. The deity worshipped here is known as the Karnataka state goddess. 

5. Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

The primary place of worship in Hampi is the Virupaksha Temple, which has long been revered as a sacred site is the Virupaksha temple. 

6. Vidyashankara Temple in Sringeri

In the year 1338 AD, the Vidyashankara Temple was constructed. It is a distinctive monument made completely of stone that combines Dravidian and Hoysala (Chalukya) architectural elements. 

7. Mallikarjuna Temple, Pattadakal

The queens of Vikramaditya II (734–74) built this temple in remembrance of his successful march against Kanchi, the Pallava capital. 

8. Kedareshwara temple, Balligavi

Soapstone is the material used for construction of this beautiful temple in Karnataka. The architecture is classified as being distinctly Hoysala by the Archaeological Survey of India.

9. Kotilingeshwara Temple, Kolar

Due to the presence of the biggest and tallest linga in Asia, the temple is incredibly well-known. People estimate that there are 100,000 lingas in this area.

10. Durga Temple, Aihole

It is the most ornately decorated monument in Aihole, standing on a high platform with rekha nagara’ style of Shikhara. The temple appears to have been built in the late 7th or early 8th century. 

11. Chennakesava Temple, Somanathapura

It is 38 kilometres (km) east of the city of Mysuru and is famous for its complex carvings, inscriptions, and representations. A courtyard surrounds the temple, which has a pillared passageway lined with tiny shrines. 

12. Badami Cave Temple, Bagalkot

These four temples, three Brahmanical and one Jain, have been cut out of the hillside opposite Badami Fort and are enclosed in caves. 

13. Udupi Sri Krishna Matha

Sri Krishna Matha temple in Udupi is dedicated to Lord Krishna and was built in the 13th century, It was founded by Vaishnavite saint Shri Madhvacharya. 

14. Hoysaleswara temple, Halebidu

The Hoysaleswara temple is a beautiful temple surrounded by mantapas, lakes, and ponds. The sculptures and architecture of the Hoysala period are the highlights here. 

15. Murudeshwar Shiva Temple

Murudeshwar temple in Gokarna in Karnataka is one of the most scenic temples in Karnataka, on the shore of the sea.
