If you follow Nagaland’s Minister of Higher Education and Tourism, Temjen Imna Along, you know you will be smiling at his every post, probably laughing too. He is known for sharing funny stories, and many of those are self-deprecating jokes. But along with that, he also shares snippets of Nagaland to promote it. This time, he has shared a picture of Nagaland’s GI-tagged tomatoes and also listed their health benefits.

Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along shared a picture of Nagaland’s GI-tagged tomato. Known as the Naga Tree Tomato, this tomato is locally known as Sei Bangenuo or Khwüdi. 

This tomato is given the GI tag because of its tangy-tart taste and unique shape. It is known as the region’s most valuable exotic agricultural product. The tomato is oval in shape and grown in the small orchards of the northeastern state’s hilly terrain.

Along with the reason behind its GI-tag, Temjen also mentioned the benefits of this. It is completely packed with vitamins A, C, and E, a good source of B-complex vitamins, pro-vitamin A, and other nutrients that can also improve the immune system.

Main Ingredient For Soups And Salads

Nagaland’s GI-tagged tomato grows on a subtropical tree. It grows to about 5 metres and is found in Manipur, Sikkim, and Darjeeling. The flowers are pinkish-white, have a pungent smell, and have large leaves. The plant bears fruit throughout the year. These tomatoes have various colours, like orange, red, yellow, and purple. 

The ones with yellow and orange colours tend to have a sweet taste, while the red ones are sour. This tomato is the favourite ingredient for soups and salads in different districts like Kohima, Wokha, Tuensang, Mon, Phek, Zunheboto, and Kiphire. 

Talking about other dishes, this tomato chutney Naga Tree Tomato Chutney is super famous. This chutney is made using chopped onion, mustard oil, Raja Mirchi, fresh coriander, and, of course, tree tomato. 

GI tags are given to fruits or vegetables that are grown in a certain geographical location, and the full form is “geographic indication.
