Travelling to Japan means enjoying Japanese food, sipping on matcha and lots and lots of shopping. But as of November 1, Japan has ended its tax-free shopping system for foreign tourists. Here’s what it means and what you should know before you make your next purchase in the anime-loving nation.

Japan Ends Its Tax-Free Shopping System For Tourists

Until now, tourists in Japan could shop at participating stores without paying sales tax. To avail themselves of this benefit, they had to shop for 5,000 yen (₹2,989) or more and show their passport. According to Japan Today, the sales tax in the country is generally 10%, and many retail shops, including smaller ones, offered this service. This system helped tourists save a considerable amount of money.

But now, Japan has replaced this system with a new tax-refund process. Foreign travellers will have to pay the full sales tax at the time of purchase. However, here’s the important part: they can apply for a refund before their departure flight from Japan.

How Can Tourists Claim A Tax Refund?

According to Japan Today, foreign shoppers will still need to show their passports while buying things in Japan. Then, at the airport before leaving, they will need to complete a tax-refund application process at a kiosk or electronic self-service terminal. After showing their passports, the customs agent or terminal screen will inform travellers whether their applications require an additional inspection.

If they do, travellers will need to show all the items for which they are seeking a tax refund. This will be done before they check in their luggage. Once the entire procedure is complete, travellers can choose whether they want the tax refund through their credit card company or a bank transfer. Keep in mind that refund processing can take a few weeks.
