Every country has its own traditions and festivals that people celebrate with great enthusiasm. However, sometimes these celebrations can raise concerns about public and travel safety. Now, ahead of Thailand’s popular Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festivals, Chiang Mai International Airport has announced major flight changes. Read on to know why the airport has taken this decision and what changes passengers can expect!
Why Is Thailand’s Airport Cancelling Hundreds Of Flights?
Thailand is expecting over 2 lakh sky lanterns and smoke lanterns within the airport’s safety zone on November 24 and 25. So, keeping everyone’s safety in mind, Chiang Mai International Airport has decided to cancel 108 flights and reschedule 80 between November 21 and 28. With this decision, the airport is making sure that lanterns don’t disrupt flight operations.
Don’t worry, though. While some flights are cancelled, the airport is also planning to run 105 additional special services during those eight days. As per the Bangkok Post, the airport has instructed airlines to avoid operating flights between 10 AM and noon on November 24. It has also restricted flights from 7 PM on November 24 to 1 AM on November 25. This means the airport will operate for only 12 hours a day instead of 20 hours.

Passengers May Experience Congestion Inside Airport
Even with the flight restrictions and cancellations, the airport is still expecting around 210 flights every day. As per Hindustan Times, on the busiest days, this number could increase up to 232 flights, which is about 10% more than usual. Also, as many flights will operate within fewer hours, passengers may face longer queues and crowds.
To keep flights safe, authorities have banned people from releasing lanterns in certain red zones, especially near aircraft take-off and landing routes. The airport has also informed pilots and aviation operators about the restricted timings.
P.S. If you’re travelling in these eight days, make sure you stay updated with your flight status. The airport has also arranged additional facilities like taxis, shuttle buses and rental cars, for arriving passengers.
