When travelling abroad, you often have to switch to a local SIM card or rely on a Wi-Fi connection to stay connected. But now, things could change. The government’s new SIM-binding mandate could make it difficult for travellers to use messaging apps like WhatsApp. Scroll down to know what changes!

New SIM-Binding Rules May Affect WhatsApp Users

With the new SIM-binding mandate, messaging apps like WhatsApp and other platforms will only work when the active SIM linked to an account is present in the device. As per NDTV report, the rule will come into effect on January 1, 2027. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) says this step aims to reduce online scams and ensure that Indian mobile numbers are not misused.

The Department of Telecommunications first asked service providers to follow the new SIM-binding rules on November 28, 2025, and complete the process by March 28, 2026. However, after industry players requested more time to prepare for the changes, the department extended the deadline to December 31, 2026.

Esya Centre, a research organisation, conducted a study to understand how the new SIM-binding rules could affect consumers and businesses. For this, it collected responses from 2,033 consumers across 18 Indian cities and 353 businesses across 17 cities to understand the possible challenges.

What Challenges Will Travellers Face?

According to the study, only 33% of international travellers use an Indian SIM with an active international roaming plan. The remaining 67.1% rely on local SIM cards, Wi-Fi or a second SIM card. This means most travellers could face challenges under the new rules.

The study found that nearly 98.88% of surveyed consumers said losing access to messaging apps would cause moderate to extreme inconvenience. . Travellers are also concerned that they may have to verify their accounts again from time to time. This could interrupt their conversations, especially when they are abroad.
