Vande Bharat Express or Train 18  is India’s fastest engineless train which has been damaged twice due to stone pelting during trial runs.

What Is It?

India’s pride: Train 18 has been named the Vande Bharat Express in recognition of the vandaniya work done by Indian Railways. The Make in India Vande Bharat Express has been designed and developed in a record time of 18 months by ICF Chennai at a cost of Rs 97 crore. The train has been damaged twice during its trial run due to stone pelting and the Indian Railways is planning to protect more such self-propelled train sets from damage by manufacturing special frames that will be used in the windows to make the glass ‘shatter proof’.

The new train-18 or the Vande Bharat Express will be ready for roll-out by the end of March this year.

What Else?

A few days ago, some miscreants had pelted stones at the Vande Bharat Express during its trial run. This was the second such incident that took place in December when the window glass of a coach was severely damaged. To protect the new trains, special frames will be fitted in the windows which will make the glass shatter proof. While the glass can still be hit when the train is running in high-speed, the new frames will ensure that the glass doesn’t shatter and hit the passengers.

Apart from shatter proof windows, the new Train 18 or the Vande Bharat Express will also have a bigger pantry in each coach and the passengers will be served two meals.

The first train-18 will run between Delhi to Varanasi with a duration of total 8 hours to cover the distance with speeds of 130 kmph.
