Athens’ Former Airport, Ellinikon Emerges Europe’s Largest Smart City; 5 Things To Do

Athens is soaring towards a future of innovation with the Ellinikon Project. This colossal undertaking is transforming the city’s decommissioned international airport into Ellinikon, destined to be Europe’s biggest smart city.

Breathing New Life Into Athens’ Former Airport

Ellinikon International Airport closed its doors in 2001, leaving behind a vast, underutilized space. Now, this prime real estate is primed for a remarkable rebirth. Spanning over 6,200 acres, the project is slated for completion by 2037. It promises to be a sustainable metropolis, a stark contrast to the footprint of a traditional airport.

Lamda Development, the Greek company behind the project, envisions Ellinikon as a futuristic urban centre built around three core principles: sustainable energy, open spaces, and abundant green zones.  Imagine a cityscape designed with environmental responsibility in mind. Residents will navigate their daily lives by walking, cycling, or using public transport, minimizing reliance on cars. The extensive green spaces planned for Ellinikon will not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to cleaner air and a more comfortable living environment.

Technology will be the lifeblood of Ellinikon. The concept of a “15-minute city” is at the heart of the urban planning. This translates to residents having access to essential services like schools, parks, offices, shops, and even the beach within a 15-minute walk or cycle.

Smart software will be integrated throughout the city, monitoring and optimising waste management, water usage, and energy consumption. This “smart” infrastructure will ensure efficient resource utilisation and a minimised environmental impact.

But what will life be like in Ellinikon?  While the full picture is still emerging, glimpses of the exciting possibilities are already coming into focus.

  • Extensive parks and green spaces will provide ample opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Imagine picnicking under olive trees, jogging along coastal paths, or enjoying a leisurely bike ride through the city.
  • Dedicated spaces for museums, art galleries, and performance venues promise a vibrant cultural scene.
  • Cutting-edge shopping experiences are on the horizon, with a focus on sustainability and local businesses alongside established brands.
  • Restaurants catering to diverse culinary preferences will be integrated throughout the city, offering a chance to savour Greek and international flavours.
  • Ellinikon’s prime coastal location promises easy access to pristine beaches, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or indulging in water sports.
