In the heart of Bali, where lush landscapes meet flowing rivers, a revolution in design is taking place. Meet Sungai Design, a visionary endeavour that’s turning the tide on plastic pollution by transforming it into exquisite, long-lasting furniture and art installations. Their mission? To showcase the boundless potential of waste and pioneer a new era of sustainable design.

The journey begins with a simple yet powerful idea: to reclaim the plastic choking Indonesia’s rivers and breathe new life into them. With the help of their non-profit counterpart, Sungai Watch, Sungai Design sources its raw material – plastic bags – from the most polluted waterways. Each chair, each piece of art, carries with it a tale of transformation, born from 2,000 plastic bags rescued from the brink of environmental disaster.

But Sungai Design doesn’t stop at mere recycling. They employ an intricate process to ensure their products not only look stunning but also stand as a testament to sustainability. Through meticulous cleaning, shredding, and heat-pressing techniques, the plastic bags are reborn as sturdy sheets, ready to be moulded into works of art. Utilising cutting-edge CNC technology, these sheets are sculpted into parametric panels, each designed for optimal comfort and style.

The result? Despite their modest beginnings, these chairs radiate elegance with their sleek lines and floating appearance. It’s not just furniture; it’s a declaration of intent to leave the planet cleaner than they found it.

Behind Sungai Design’s aesthetic allure lies a staggering impact. With 1,800,000 kilograms of trash collected from Indonesian waterways and 305,000 kilograms of plastic bags diverted from the ocean, their efforts are not just symbolic; they’re tangible. Each chair, crafted from 30 kilograms of upcycled plastic, represents a step towards a cleaner, greener future.

But Sungai Design is more than just a company; it’s a movement. A movement that champions innovation, sustainability, and the relentless pursuit of a better world. Through their pioneering work, they’re rewriting the narrative of waste.

Sungai Design is a revolution that’s turning Bali’s rivers from cesspools of pollution into wellsprings of creativity and hope.
