Amidst The Rising Cases Across Globe, Hong Kong Has Decided To Scrap COVID-19 Test On Arrival. Is It A Smart Move?

The cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again throughout the world. There are already speculations of another lockdown happening soon. At a time like this, precautionary measures should be the name of the game. But it seems that the concern is not shared by all. In a recent move, Hong Kong authorities have decided to scrap several COVID-19 measures that were initially a mandate. Many have attributed this move to the widespread protest within the region.

Hong Kong Scraps COVID-19 Test For International Arrivals

The mandate for COVID-19 tests that were compulsory for all international travellers to Hong Kong has recently been scrapped. This move by the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong was announced on Wednesday, the 28th of December. It will be put into effect from Thursday, the 29th of December. This move comes after China, too, eased the strict COVID-19 restrictions that were imposed throughout the land since 2020.

Other Precautionary Measures That Were Scrapped

Initially, a pass was issued to people who have taken the COVID-19 vaccine. This pass gave them access to most public places and allowed them to enter venues. The requirement for this has also now been scrapped. Moreover, social distancing will no longer be enforced even though wearing masks will be obligatory. Probably the most worrying mandate that was scrapped was quarantining.

John Lee, the leader of Hong Kong announced that people who have tested positive for COVID-19 will no longer be required to quarantine. China has maintained strict COVID-19 protocols since 2020, hence this abrupt change in policy comes as a surprise. This sudden change may be a result of the protests within the region against these strict norms. However, seeing the rising cases of COVID-19 worldwide, this may not be the best move.
