Bengaluru Band Performs Song Written By ChatGPT At An AI Conference; Can AI Also Replace Art?

Ever since ChatGPT was first launched in November 2022, it has revolutionised how tasks are performed. In addition to this, ChatGPT has also raised a number of interesting ethical, philosophical and even existential questions. The discourse on whether humans and activities are replaceable by AI has always been around. ChatGPT’s advent has only reinvigorated the debate. Recently, a Bengaluru-based band performed a song written by ChatGPT and the video has now gone viral.

Bengaluru Band Performs Song Written By ChatGPT

Recently, a video of a band performing a song written by ChatGPT, and a language model which employs artificial intelligence, went viral on social media. The video was posted by a user on X (formerly known as Twitter) and was performed at a conference on Artificial Intelligence. How very fitting! The song was performed by a fusion band called Swarathma at CYPHER 2023.

They asked the AI tool to write a chorus of eight lines about singing at an AI conference with a lady in red. As per a post by the band, the lady was grooving in the front row! Based on the post, it seems that the band had a lot of fun performing the song. Since the video was first posted on the micro-blogging website, it has garnered more than nine thousand views!

Be that as it may, the Internet had a mixed reaction. While some were pleasantly taken aback by this fusion of art and technology, others responded with trepidation regarding the prospect of being replaced. That AI can make many tasks significantly easier and can easily replace a lot of work that humans do, is known. But its prospect of replacing artistic pursuits was not expected.

Can Art Also Be Replaced By AI?

Many humans perceive artistic pursuits as the very mark of humanity. That no other known organism can engage in such pursuits and we can, has been a source of pride and even identity for humans. However, given the speed with which AI is advancing, many have wondered if AI, too, can create art. This recent incident of the band making music with AI can be viewed as proof of its possibility.

People who disagree generally resort to pointing out that human brains are vastly more intricate and its intricacy enables us to engage meaningfully and create art and music. However, despite advancements in neuroscience, human brains and how they operate is still largely a mystery. If complexity is solely what enables us to make art then it is highly likely that in future, equally sophisticated AI could create art as well.
