More often than not, it’s a given fact that processed food and refined sugar can make you gain weight and calories. But now, there’s a new study published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, that states fructose or sugar in fruits may also lead to obesity. So, what is all that about? Does sugar in fruits make you fat? Read on to know this study on fruits, fructose and obesity.

Fructose AKA Sugar In Fruits Can Make You Fat, Says Study

This new multi-centre review, states that fructose may lead to obesity as this is caused by an evolutionary “survival switch”. Here, people end up storing energy from fructose instead of using it. While glucose is used to fuel the body with energy, fructose on the other hand may make the body store it as fat and calories.

For people who are food-deprived, fructose may not make them gain weight. But for people who already have continuous access to high-sugar foods, it can make them gain weight. If calorie intake is reduced, this lower energy usage might lead to weight gain. When people consume fructose in moderation through whole fruits, the fibre content and slow absorption makes it a healthy lifestyle decision.

What Foods Must You Avoid?

This is people usually eat fruits in small amounts. However, when fructose is consumed in larger quantities in concentrated forms like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) it can lead to weight gain and even obesity. The study further states that the modern Western diet packed with processed food, sweets and sugary drinks leads to excessive fructose consumption.

So, what kind of foods are filled with fructose that you can avoid to prevent weight gain? The study lists these as sodas, pre-prepared meals, salad dressings, maple-flavoured syrup, coconut sugar, honey, crackers, sweetened fruit juices and even bread and pastries.

So, sugar in fruits or fructose can lead to weight gain if they aren’t consumed in its natural form, through fruits. When mixed with high-sugar foods it can make you fat.
