Did You Know That There’s A Town Called Delhi In Delaware County Of United States Of America?

Whenever we speak about Delhi, we refer to the capital city of India. But you might be surprised to know that there’s another town in Delaware County that’s named after our capital territory. The town of Delhi is located in the north-eastern part of Delaware and is noted for its famous state university SUNY. The town has a scanty population of around  5,117, as estimated by the 2010 census. The Delaware River separates the Delaware County from the state of Pennsylvania. The county is nestled within the Southern Tier region of the New York State.

The Story Of The Delhi Town

The name ‘Delhi’ was given to the town by Ebenezer Foote who was also entitled as ‘The Great Mogul’. It was formed by the amalgam of three other towns- Middletown, Kortright and Walton on 23rd March 1798. At one time, Delhi used to the melting pot of top-notch commercial activities of the country. The town is surrounded by slopes and valleys that have emerged from the Catskill foothills. Some noteworthy landmarks of the town are the Presbyterian Church, the Gideon Frisbee House, the Delaware County Courthouse and the Soldier’s monument, among many others. There is also a wooden covered bridge, the Fitch’s Bridge that dates back to 1870.

The Murray Hill, the Sherwood Family Estate and the Gideon Frisbee House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Another prominent building in the town is the Delhi Village Hall, where trails of New York’s Anti-Rent War used to take place.

The Gorgeous Village Of Delhi

The town has a village with the same name, which is also a tourist hot spot due to its stunning scenic beauty.  The Catskill Mountains, the gushing streams flowing through the valleys, the rich flora and fauna make the Delhi village an abode of tranquillity. Fascinated by the charm of the village, an early postcard producer had even created a set of postcards portraying the area as ‘Delhi – The Garden Spot of the Catskills’. The village was incorporated into the town in the year 1821.  Delhi was also the setting of the 1959 novel by Jean Craighead George, My Side of the Mountain.
