New York’s dining scene recently welcomed a new addition with the opening of Drāvida, a chef-led restaurant that honours the rich culinary traditions of the South Asian diaspora. Want to know what all they serve? Read on!
Aarthi Sampath Launches Drāvida In New York
Situated in Manhattan’s East Village, the restaurant is the debut venture of chef and entrepreneur Aarthi Sampath, who has invested over a decade developing her culinary career in the United States. Located at 211 1st Avenue, Drāvida explores how South Asian flavours have travelled and transformed across regions, cultures and generations. Taking inspiration from different countries like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Trinidad, Guyana and others, the restaurant seeks to present traditional dishes in a contemporary New York setting while staying rooted in authenticity and heritage.
At Drāvida, the main focus is on home-cooked dishes and lesser-known local cuisines that are often overlooked in traditional restaurant culture. The menu focuses on the impact of South Asian migration across the Caribbean, Africa and Southeast Asia, offering a culinary journey that represents centuries of cultural interaction.
Signature dishes include Trinidad’s beloved Doubles; South Africa’s Oxtail Bunny Chow served in bread; Idli & Shrimp, inspired by South Indian and Indonesian flavours, and the Nasi Kandar Feast, a hearty Indo-Malay spread featuring rice, curries and side dishes. Cocktails such as the Passionfruit Lassi, Drāvida Highball and Orange Cream redefine classic South Asian tastes using a modern lens while enhancing the restaurant’s globally inspired menu.
