Fact Check: Kolkata’s Viral Roshogolla Roll Is Controversial For Sure, But It Is Not Sweet!

No matter if it is street food or traditional delicacies or gourmet dishes, Bengali cuisine serves the best of everything! There are tons of food options that Bengalis cannot live without and Roshogolla and Rolls are two of the major favourites of Bengalis. As a Bangali, I can vouch for the craze, love, and fondness for these two yummy food items. But a recent viral video just disappointed us so much. An eatery is making a roll using roshogolla. Though the name is “Roshogolla Roll” and it gives quite a good reason for foodies to feel ditched, they are using chanar kofta to cook this dish. The name and the ingredients are surely not aligning at all, creating major confusion among street food lovers.

Roshogolla Roll: Oh God! What’s This Now?

A food blogging page named Kolkata’s illusion | Kolkata (@kolkatas.illusion) shared a video of a new roll on Instagram and foodies simply cannot keep calm!

This video shows how a food joint in Baghajatin, Kolkata prepares a roll. The process is very similar to other rolls that we usually eat. But what grabbed everyone’s attention is the name roshogolla roll. It seems like the vendor uses roshogolla to stuff the roll and this is just making foodies disappointed. But in reality, the stuffed food is actually chanaar kofta.

Netizens Are Confused!

Most Bengalis are very skeptical of their food and this recent viral video of roshogolla roll is just making the Netizens mad. Many of them have not tasted it yet and the name is making everything very confusing to understand. With over 132K views, the video has garnered thousands of likes and hundreds of comments. Most comments are about thrashing this new street food invention mixing roshogolla and roll. While rolls are meant to savoury, roshogolla dipped in sweet syrup is the most delish mishti. Both are the emperors of their variety of food, but their merging together is a big naah!! No Bengalis can even imagine eating something like roshogolla and a roll together.

To clear out all the fuss and confusion, an Instagram user commented “Hello, All. I personally tried this roll for this video and this almost tastes like a paneer roll that we eat usually. They are using chhanar kofta as Roshogolla which isn’t sweet at all. This place just named it Roshogolla Roll because these koftas look alike Mini Roshogolla.” Chanar Kofta is a deep-fried ball made using chhana (a type of cheese). Savoury curry recipes are cooked using these koftas.

Chalo, now that’s a big relief right? Roshogolla Roll gets a big no-no from us but we give a thumbs up to rolls made with chanar kofta. Kolkatans, will you give this roll a try?
