Though Portugal is one of the most affordable European cities, travelling can be costly, if you are opting for taxis. However, train service in the country is quite affordable and they have introduced an unlimited monthly pass that everyone— locals and tourists included— can use!

The pass allows you to explore the country’s beautiful coastline for less than Euro 50. In fact, the pass can be acquired for Euro 49 (around ₹4390). Other European countries like Spain, Germany and France also offer similar affordable railway services.

The Comboios de Portugal National Rail Pass provides access to practically all regional train networks. It’s important to keep in mind that it excludes urban services like the underground and well-known trams in Porto, Lisbon, and Coimbra. There are no restrictions on the number of rides or blackout times for the trains it does include, though.

Travellers must obtain a CP Client card in order to receive the new pass, which is easily obtained in offices around the nation by presenting identification. However, be aware that it does cost an additional EUR 6 (INR 538). The new monthly pass, which is valid from the start of each calendar month to its conclusion, can then be loaded onto the card.

Once that is done, you can just travel from Lisbon to Porto by taking one of the regional trains. Additionally, you can climb the renowned Clérigos Tower for a 360-degree panorama of the city below and then indulge in tempting treats offered by different cafes.

Further, you can travel to Elvas, the UNESCO World Heritage city, which offers some of the best scenic views of old Portugal! The rail pass covers almost the entire country and you can explore several amazing places.
