Badami hills in Karnataka is just a stone throw’s away from Hampi and carries forward the historic charm, unexplored by many.

What Is It?

Dense caves, historic sculptures, ancient temples are what you’re in for at this beautiful town located in Karnataka, about 3 hours away from Hampi. Badami is also known as the land of Chalukyas, it was the capital of the Early Chalukyas located in North Karnataka.

What’s In It?

Go back in time in the era of 6th & 7th centuries, visit the ancient architecture and caves belonging to the Chalukyas, feel the historical importance of this ancient town. As soon as you reach the town, you will be greeted by a red sandstone cave situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills. The four cave temples are all cut-out of the rock carved in the 6th and 7th centuries.

Take a stroll through the four cave temples, feel the exquisite beauty and charm of it. The first cave was built in 578 A.D, dedicated to Lord Shiva, it adorns 81 sculptures of Lord Shiva in the form of ‘Natraj’. The cave even has a verandah and pillars with paintings on it.

The second cave is dedicated to Lord Vishnu at the summit of the hill and the third cave is perched on the hill. The fourth cave is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of the Jains and is also the largest of them all.

There are several places to visit around Badami, the historic village of Pattadakal which is just 20 km is worth a visit being the second capital of the Chalukyas, it too has several temples dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries.
