In A First, Lucknow Gets A Toilet For Transgenders!

When you visit a public restroom, you can see only two separate toilets built, one for men and the other for women. The most you’d ever see is a separate toilet for people with disabilities. But what about transgender people? Well, on World Toilet Day, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation installed a separate toilet for transgenders. This separate toilet was opened in the General Post Office in Lucknow.

Toilet For Transgenders In Lucknow

Lucknow installed its first transgender toilet in order to eliminate gender discrimination against transgender people in society. Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Niharika Jaiswal, said that all transgender people must benefit from the enforcement of their constitutionally guaranteed rights. The rights are mentioned in the National Legal Services Authority vs. Union of India writ petition.

The new separate transgender toilet is built in accordance with District Legal Services Authority directives. The installation was made possible by Justice Shankar Sanjay Pandey, District Judge of Lucknow, and the Municipal Commissioner of the city.

Transgender Toilets In India

Previously, there was no separate restroom built for transgender people by the Municipal Corporation. They only focused on building pink toilets, public toilets, and community toilets. The toilet was installed in the General Post Office’s Sulabh Toilet in Hazratganj. Apart from men’s and women’s toilets, they also have separate toilets for differently abled people.

This transgender toilet is the first one in Lucknow, but not in India. Last year, Uttar Pradesh got its first transgender toilet in Varanasi. Omble Garden in Goregaon’s Aarey area in Mumbai also has a separate toilet for transgenders. The Delhi Metro also welcomed a separate toilet for transgenders last year.
