The Fascinating Story Of Rajasthan’s ‘Ghee Temple’

Ask around and someone will inevitably tell you that this 500-year-old temple wasn’t built with water at all. Instead, nearly 40,000 kilograms of pure ghee allegedly went into its construction. Then comes the second part of the tale; on blistering summer days, traces of that ancient ghee are said to seep from the structure itself.

It sounds more like mythology and that’s what makes this slice of Rajasthan magical. Yet the legend has become so deeply ingrained into Bikaner’s identity that the temple is now known across India as the “ghee temple.”

The story begins in the 15th century with Bhanda Shah, also known as Bhandasa Oswal, a wealthy Jain merchant whose name the temple still carries. Construction is believed to have started around 1468 CE, when Bikaner was emerging as a trading centre in the harsh Thar Desert. Water scarcity was a constant reality! According to local tradition, this shortage inspired an extraordinary solution of using huge quantities of ghee in the mortar mixture.

Another version of the story adds a dash of medieval drama. It says an architect once mocked Bhanda Shah after watching him save a tiny drop of spilled ghee, calling him miserly. Determined to prove otherwise, the merchant supposedly donated an enormous quantity of ghee for the temple’s construction. Over centuries, the anecdote evolved into one of Rajasthan’s most enduring pieces of folklore.

But here’s where the viral reels usually stop. Because the real surprise waits inside.

Bhandasar Jain Temple: Where Art And Folklore Collide

Step through the temple’s doors and the conversation moves from ghee to art. Every available surface seems to have become a canvas. Pillars bloom with floral patterns, ceilings explode into intricate geometric designs and walls carry elaborate frescoes depicting Jain religious themes, stories and the 24 Tirthankaras. Gold detailing catches the light and mirror work sparkles between painted motifs. The result feels like walking into a centuries-old illustrated manuscript.

Art enthusiasts often point to the influence of Bikaner’s celebrated Usta artisans, whose decorative techniques once adorned royal courts and palaces. The temple itself rises across three storeys and is dedicated to Sumatinath, the fifth Jain Tirthankara. Built from red sandstone and yellow stone rather than the white marble associated with many famous Jain shrines, it possesses a distinct visual magic.

This is perhaps why the Bhandasar Jain Temple refuses to be reduced to a single headline. It is a monument where merchant wealth became devotion, where folklore became history’s travelling companion, and where a story about 40,000 kilograms of ghee has nearly overshadowed one of Rajasthan’s most extraordinary artistic treasures.
