How Will New Windscreens On Mumbai-Pune Expressway Protect Vehicles From 100 Kmph Crosswinds?

In a major safety upgrade for travellers, especially motorists heading towards Pune from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Want to know what exactly it is? Read on!

Mumbai-Pune Expressway To Get Advanced Windscreens

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has officially announced the work on putting in high-quality windscreens along the enormous cable-stayed bridge portion of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s ‘missing link’ project.

The specially designed windscreens are being set up on either side as a shield for smaller vehicles from high-velocity crosswinds that risk causing cars to skid, turn laterally, or even topple over while travelling through the deep valley.

As per a report by Mid-Day, on-site installation of the customised windscreens has already begun. An official spokesperson told the portal that these barriers are especially designed to break the wind’s velocity, preventing sudden lateral thrusts and accidents while ensuring the stability for motorists crossing the link during the monsoon season.

How Will It Protect The Motorists?

The official also told the portal that the 650-metre-long cable-stayed over Tiger Valley stands at an extraordinary height, with massive 182-metre pillars that allow the corridor to be completely exposed to high-velocity mountain gales. He also stated that the authorities have observed instances where wind speeds can escalate up to 100 kmph within minutes. At such high altitudes, strong crosswinds create a major risk of lateral vehicle movement, which can cause cars to drift and lead to accidents.

If reports are to be believed, the goal is to achieve long-term climate resilience. Over the most recent years, there has been a visible increase in severe cyclonic storms forming in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Since this infrastructure is engineered for a 100-year design life, the authorities are fully prepared for future extreme weather events.
