With winter approaching, air pollution is once again becoming a concern for people living in India’s major cities. While Delhi-NCR continues to battle poor air quality, Mumbai has also witnessed a sharp rise in pollution levels over the past few weeks. And it seems people are already preparing for the months ahead. Air purifier sales on Amazon have doubled in the past week as more households look for ways to improve the air inside their homes.

Why Are Air Purifier Sales Rising In India?

According to a Moneycontrol report, the surge in demand comes ahead of the peak winter pollution season, when air quality typically deteriorates further across several parts of the country. Delhi-NCR continues to account for the bulk of purchases, but retailers are also noticing increased interest from Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

The worsening air quality in Delhi-NCR appears to be one of the biggest reasons behind the sudden increase in purchases. On November 5, Delhi recorded an AQI of 369 at 4 PM, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. Gurugram also recorded an AQI of 331, while Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida reported readings in the poor to very poor categories.

Mumbai, meanwhile, has also seen its air quality deteriorate. Its average AQI more than doubled in October compared to September, with construction activity, traffic emissions and weaker coastal winds contributing to the worsening conditions.

Air Purifiers Are No Longer Limited To Delhi

For many households, air purifiers are increasingly becoming more than just an occasional winter purchase. Moneycontrol reported that repeat buyers are now purchasing additional units for separate bedrooms and larger living spaces instead of relying on a single appliance for the entire house.

An electronics store in central Delhi reportedly saw demand rise by 50%, with customers returning to purchase their second or third air purifier. Vijay Sales has also recorded high single-digit year-on-year growth in air purifier sales during the early part of the season, with demand extending beyond Delhi.

Interestingly, the growing demand is not restricted to the national capital. Retailers are noticing increased enquiries from Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata as awareness about indoor air quality grows.

Amazon has also expanded the availability of air purifiers on its quick-commerce platform, Amazon Now. Customers can access models from brands such as Philips, Honeywell and Eureka Forbes across more than 120 cities, with delivery available within minutes in eligible locations.
