Diwali is not just about bursting firecrackers or cleaning our homes. It is also about enjoying delicious sweets. During Diwali, we often buy boxes of mithai to serve guests, share with family and even gift when we visit someone’s home. However, at the back of our minds, we sometimes worry about whether the sweets are fresh and of good quality. Understanding this concern, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has stepped in with a new rule. Read on to know more!
Ahmedabad Sweet Shops To Keep Food-Testing Kits This Diwali
This Diwali, the AMC has introduced a new rule for sweet shops and food manufacturers. Sweet shops and farsan manufacturers earning more than ₹5 lakh annually must keep food-testing kits. With this, customers will be able to check certain sweets and food products for adulteration before buying them.
As per Ahmedabad Mirror, this move comes after authorities seized over 40,000 kg of adulterated mawa. The AMC Standing Committee approved this decision on Thursday, October 29.
What Is The Price Of A Food-Testing Kit?
You can purchase a food-testing kit for around ₹3,000.

What Can You Check With These Kits?
If you’re buying sweets and want to check their quality, you can ask the Ahmedabad sweet shops to use these kits. They can help detect starch in mawa, check if the silver coating (varakh) on sweets is genuine and identify added colours. Around 350 outlets have already purchased these kits.
Even after testing the sweets, if you still think there is a problem, you can file a complaint with the AMC health department. Remember, these kits have certain limitations. They cannot detect every type of food adulteration. Also, if any sweet shop is caught selling poor-quality or unsafe food products, it will face action under food safety rules.
