For Mumbai commuters who spend hours travelling across the city, keeping their phones charged is an everyday concern. From work calls and digital payments to navigation and staying connected, smartphones have become an essential part of daily journeys. Addressing this need, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that every coach of the upcoming Metro Green Line 4 trains will have eight to 10 mobile charging points. Scroll down to know more.

Mumbai’s Metro Line 4 To Have Charging Points

The announcement comes after complaints that the underground Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 trains, manufactured by Alstom, do not have charging points for passengers. The new Alstom-built trains for Green Line 4, which will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli, are expected to offer this facility along with bicycle racks. MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee told mid-day that the new Alstom trains on Green Line 4 would have eight to 10 charging points in every coach, along with facilities such as bicycle racks, adding that MMRDA was focused on commuter convenience. Alstom officials said the amenities provided in the trains depend on the requirements specified by the procuring authority.

Several Mumbai Metro services, including Yellow Line 2 and Red Line 7, which use trains manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), offer mobile charging points. However, the Aqua Line 3 trains do not have this facility despite being manufactured by Alstom.

According to sources, the omission was a conscious decision rather than an oversight. Charging points were reportedly excluded due to concerns about electrical safety incidents involving such facilities in train coaches elsewhere. The difference highlights how passenger amenities can vary across Metro corridors, depending on the specifications finalised during procurement and design.

Green Metro Line 4 To Offer New Passenger Convenience

The upcoming Green Line 4 trains will feature charging points distributed along the length of each coach, allowing commuters to charge their phones without having to move far from their seats, an official said. The provision of bicycle racks is another passenger-friendly feature planned for the corridor. The line, being developed by MMRDA, will connect Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavli in Thane, improving connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Officials have also emphasised that amenities such as charging points must be specified by the procuring authority during the design and tendering stages. Manufacturers then build the trains according to these requirements, making the procurement process central to the facilities passengers eventually receive.
