India is home to many architectural marvels and now, it is soon going to have one more addition to it. The existing 105-year-old Pamban Rail Bridge, which connects Rameswaram to mainland India is getting a facelift, and how? It is going to be the country’s first vertical-lift sea bridge connecting Rameswaram in the Arabian Sea to mainland India and will be operational from March next year.
The Vertical Bridge Can Operate At Higher Speeds & Carry More Passengers
The new bridge will allow ships and steamers to pass through without any hassle with the new 2.05 km Pamban railway bridge in Mandapam. Besides, trains can operate at higher speeds, carry more passengers, and weight, between Pamban and Rameswaram. The more than 2.5km long bridge will cost ₹250 crores approximately for completion. A 63-Metre Section Will Lift Vertically Upwards
It will also have a 63-meter stretch that will lift and the remaining part will stay parallel to the deck to allow access to the ships. The current bridge has the ‘Scherzer’ rolling lift technology where the bridge opens up horizontally to let the ships cross. However, in the new bridge, a 63-metre section will lift vertically upwards and will remain parallel to the deck. Sensors will also be used at each end of this bridge.
