President Ram Nath Kovind has signed off an order that strips Jammu and Kashmir off its special status which was through Section 370 in the law. It is now to be a Union territory along with Ladakh. And that’s not it, the Ladakh Union territory will also not have any legislature as opposed to the Jammu and Kashmir Union territory.

What’s more?

The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, had planned on this bifurcation of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. “The Ladakh Division of the State of Jammu and Kashmir has a large area but is sparsely populated with very difficult terrain. There has been a long-pending demand of the people of Ladakh to give it the status of a Union Territory to enable them to realise their aspirations,” said the Home Minister in a statement to The Hindu. This is also the reason why Ladakh will have no legislature of its own.
