Kamiya Jani visited Dichu, located at the easternmost tip of Arunachal Pradesh, and just minutes from the China border, to meet and learn more about the life of Indian Army soldiers stationed there. While she was there, she witnessed the challenges of connectivity and got to know some tips on how to survive in the jungle, find water, and even build shelter in the wild, thanks to the Indian Army soldiers.
Finally, she reached the army base and sat down with the Assam Regiment deployed there to read some messages from home. While she was there, she couldn’t help but ask them about the famous ‘Badluram ka Badan’ song. One of the soldiers explained that this regimental song is dedicated to Badluram, who died while fighting in World War II in Kohima. Kamiya was then invited to join the regiment as they sang this iconic song and what followed was truly goosebump-worthy!

Story Behind This Legendary Regimental Song
So, what exactly is the story behind ‘Badluram Ka Badan’? Well, rifleman Badluram, a soldier of the Assam Regiment of the British Indian Army, died during World War II. At that time, the quartermaster of the regiment, Sub Kandarpa Rajbongshi, did not remove his name from the ration’s roster. This meant that the remaining soldiers continued to draw ration in Badluram’s name.
This extra food helped the company survive a siege when Japanese troops surrounded them and supplies were cut. As the song goes, “Badluram ka badan zamin ke nichey hain…Toh humein uska ration milta hain…” This translates to Badluram’s body is buried but we get his rations.
This song was created in 1946 by Major M. T. Proktor and has now become the regimental song of the Assam Regiment. It is usually sung by Assam Regiment recruits at their attestation parade in Shillong.
